U-Boat Classico Sommerso Ghiera Ceramica Automatic Watch with Black Dial.
The Classico collection traces its origins to the diving watch Ilvo Fontana designed in 1942 for the Italian naval forces, retaining the left-side crown featured in the original design. This Classico Sommerso Ghiera Ceramica features a ceramic insert in its graduated unidirectional bezel and a 46 mm stainless steel case.
A U-28 automatic movement powers the hours, minutes, seconds, date, and 24-hour indication beneath a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment and a magnifying lens over the date window. The crown screws down on the left beneath a patented protective device, while the case back is secured by seven external screws. The 24-hour hand and the reference marker on the minute hand are finished in red.
The dial consists of three superimposed layers with a visible ruby and numerals framed in brushed metal. Its two-tone finish is bordeaux at the top and black at the bottom beneath a plain black ceramic bezel. The hands, numerals, and indices are treated with white Super-LumiNova for legibility in low-light conditions. The watch is fitted with a 316L stainless steel bracelet secured by a deployant clasp.

Why does the crown sit on the left?
The design traces its origins to a watch Ilvo Fontana drew in 1942 for the Italian naval forces, with the crown positioned on the left side so the hands could be set from that side. His grandson, Italo Fontana, founded U-Boat in Lucca around the original design, adding the patented clamp that secures the crown.
What does the 24-hour indication show?
The 24-hour indication uses a hand that completes one rotation per day against a 1-to-24 scale, allowing you to distinguish morning from evening at a glance while the main hour hand completes two rotations per day. The system has its origins in the 24-hour timekeeping used in marine and aviation applications.
How durable is the ceramic insert?
Ceramic is fired to a hardness greater than hardened steel and retains its color under sunlight and in salt water, so the bezel scale stays legible throughout the life of the watch. In exchange, ceramic is brittle, so its edge should be protected from hard impacts.
Why does the dive bezel turn in only one direction?
Set the marker to the minute hand at the start of a dive and read the elapsed time from the scale. Because the bezel turns in only one direction, an accidental movement can only shorten the indicated time, prompting an earlier return to the surface.
What is the stone at 6 o'clock?
A ruby set into the dial. It is a visual detail that identifies the Sommerso dial, much as the serial-number plate on the side of the case identifies the case.
