The Graf von Faber-Castell Guilloche Gulf Blue fountain pen has a blue precious-resin barrel and rhodium-plated fittings. Individual engraving gives the colored resin its fine guilloche pattern, with hand finishing forming an integral part of the barrel's decoration.
The guilloche pattern is engraved into the resin line by line, then the barrel is lacquered and polished by hand. The technique has a history in jewelry and watchmaking, including the decoration of fine watches and Fabergé eggs. The engraving establishes the pattern, while the lacquer and polishing finish the barrel's surface. Because each barrel is engraved individually, fine surface details can vary between instruments.
