- In Japanese legend, two species of fireflies, Genji-hotaru and Heike-hotaru, are associated with the ghosts of the Minamoto warriors and the Taira warriors. Every year in Japan, various observation festivals are initiated during the month of June to witness the "firefly battle." In ancient times, fireflies were also believed to offer universal remedies, counteract poison, and ward off evil. This Namiki Yukari fountain pen features the Raden technique, where the inner surface layer of various shells such as turban, trumpet, and ear-shaped shells is peeled off in a thin layer. They are then cut into small pieces and coated with Urushi lacquer to secure them in place. Next, they are polished to create a finish. Additionally, we can find the Togidashi Maki-e technique, which, by completing the background and other elements of the scene using Togidashi Maki-e techniques, gives greater emphasis to the main design using other materials such as lacquer and charcoal powder. The design is then finished using the same techniques as Hira (flat) Maki-e. The result is an impression of majestic opulence.
