How to adjust the steel bracelet of your watch

Strap for every size

In watchmaking, manufacturers default to large metal bracelets to fit different wrists. That is why it is often necessary to adjust the bracelet of the newly purchased watch. Generally, in the same place of purchase you can ask for assistance, but sometimes this possibility doesn’t exist, so you must do it yourself. Adjusting the metal strap of your watch is a relatively easy task, and here's the process.

At the end you can find a video tutorial

PREPARATION

Before we get started, make sure you have an adequate working zone, with enough light and the following tools at your disposal.

  • Small hammer
  • Small screwdriver or pushpin
  • Container
  •

To determine how many links you will need to remove, measure your wrist, but remember that some watches have the possibility of micro-adjustments in the clasp.

ADJUSTING AN OYSTER BRACELET

There are different types of bands. Links with screws, Cotter pins or Rounded fasteners. Distinguish what type of bracelet your watch is wearing and follow the instructions

Band Links with Screws

  1. Apply light pressure on the pin with the fine screwdriver and turn it counterclockwise until it loosens
  2. Once unscrewed, remove the pin and store it in the container.
  3. Once the screw is pulled out, the link will be easily removable. Repeat this action with every link you want to take away.
  4. Once the links have been removed, put the ends of the bracelet back together, repeating points 1 and 2 in reverse order.

Some brands, like Delma, bring a special tool to adjust your bracelet. You might see the Delma Diver Blue Shark III has fasteners with a shape prepared for fast and easy adjustment. You must insert the keys on both sides.

Cotter Pins

  1. Flip the watch and look inside the bracelet to see in which direction the arrows engraved on the links are pointing.
  2. Take the screwdriver and with the help of the small hammer, with firm but gentle blows release the pin. Always following the direction of the arrows.
  3. Pliers may be required to remove the pin, but are usually not necessary and can be pulled out with your fingers.
  4. Repeat until you have removed the necessary links.
  5. To assemble the cuff, repeat the above steps in the reverse order. That is, placing the bracelet with the arrow pointing up and the pin with the head facing up. Help yourself with the screwdriver and hammer to fix the pin.
  6. Repeat these steps as necessary.

Rounded of Flat fasteners

These type of bracelet is similar to the one mentioned above, but they include "stoppers" between" the links. In some cases, before removing the links, it is necessary to separate the band from the case.

  1. Use the fine and sharp tool to lever out the springbar of the buckle strap. Mind to keep this piece safely, as we will need it and it is the only one we have.
  2. Using the same tool, push the fastener of the link you want to remove according to the direction shown in the arrows engraved on the inside of the band.
  3. When they emerge from the other side, place them in the container. Some bands have steel caps between the links. Be careful about keeping them in a safe place, as we will need them in the future.
  4. Remove the second link fastener and repeat the procedure for every link you want to remove.
  5. To assemble the band, follow the same steps in reverse. If the band has steel sleeves, place them in between the link that is going to be assembled.
  6. Put the sleeves on. Help yourself with the small hammer if needed. Attach the band to the case placing the springbar. Be sure to set the closure on the right side.

ADJUSTING A MESH STRAP

  1. Undo the buckle and find a closed hook on it.
  2. With the help of the screwdriver, lever and open.
  3. Move the buckle to the required height for your wrist size.
  4. Close the latch again, applying pressure until you hear a 'click'.

Whatever type of bracelet you might have, adjusting it is an easy process, which only requires patience.
